Juventus have appointed Igor Tudor as caretaker head coach until the end of the season after parting ways with coach Thiago Motta, who has struggled to perform to his standards.

Juventus has reached an agreement with Tudor to be the caretaker coach until the end of the 2024-25 season, although Motta has not been officially dismissed yet.

Juventus’s reportedly decided to sack Motta after a 0-4 home defeat to Atalanta and a 0-3 away defeat to Fiorentina, results that were hard to accept, despite the current situation where they are still only one point behind 4th place Bologna, with the chance of a UEFA Champions League ticket still wide open.

Those results saw them slide outside the top four, below Motta’s former club Bologna and 12 points behind leaders Inter.

“Juventus FC announces that it has relieved Thiago Motta of his position as coach of the men’s first team,” a club statement said on Sunday.

“Juventus FC also announces that it has entrusted the leadership of the men’s first team to Igor Tudor, who will direct the first training session tomorrow.”

Tudor’s contract will run until the end of this season according to widespread reports, with an obligation to renew for another year if Juve qualify for the Champions League, though the club have the option to withdraw from that obligation until July 30.

Tudor has agreed a contract with Juventus. Initially, it is a short-term contract until the end of June, but there is an option to extend the contract for another season.

Tudor is the more likely option, as he does not call for an automatic extension if he can lead the team to a Champions League qualification spot this season.
